In 2013, Pakatan Rakyat secured about 51% of valid national votes, yet Barisan Nasional remained in power with 133 seats. In Selangor, Pakatan Rakyat increased its seats from 36 to 44 and obtained a two-thirds majority in the state assembly for the first time; the votes validated the state-level experiment, but did not end the leadership disputes within the coalition.
