The War Ended, The Ballot Box Did Not Return

Only after the foreign enemy retreated did Parliament realise: a door closed during wartime does not reopen by itself

In 1966, Malaysia and Indonesia ended the Confrontation. Opposition MPs immediately asked why local elections had not been restored, given that the wartime excuse for suspension had vanished. The government claimed it was still waiting for a Royal Commission; simultaneously, the National Language Bill pushed the positions of Malay, English, and other languages in official spaces into the centre of Parliament. The nation, post-war, did not breathe a sigh of relief but began fighting over the answer to "how Malaysia should function and what voice it should use".
