Why Did Singapore Leave Malaysia?

When the Public Heard the News, the Agreement Had Already Been Signed Two Days Prior; Singapore's Departure Was Neither Simply "Kicked Out" Nor an Ordinary Withdrawal

At noon on August 9, 1965, during a televised press conference, Lee Kuan Yew said he had believed in merger his entire adult life; his voice paused, and his tears fell, the camera immediately capturing this moment for an entire era. Two days earlier, Malaysian and Singaporean ministers had secretly signed a separation agreement; on that very day, Tunku Abdul Rahman brought the bill into Parliament. The federal leadership decided on separation, Singaporean officials negotiated and signed the terms, and Parliament then completed the legal severance through a constitutional amendment.
