In 1974, Barisan Nasional secured 135 out of 154 parliamentary seats. This victory stemmed from the coalition Tun Razak expanded after May 13: Gerakan, PPP, PAS, and East Malaysian parties entered the government. It broadened consultation but also compressed the space for opposition; the PAS-UMNO cooperation ultimately fractured during the Kelantan crisis.
