Why Was Malayan Union Opposed After the Signatures?

In late 1945, the Sultans signed it one by one. The objections only started afterwards — this sequence cannot be reversed

Two months after the Japanese surrender, a British special envoy began visiting the Malayan Sultans state by state, securing their signatures to hand over sovereignty. They signed. Four months later, headlines began appearing in newspapers about the Sultans protesting to London. Another month later, an organisation named UMNO was formed. This piece is about: how a constitutional plan forged a political party within two years, and why the phrase "the Malays opposed the Malayan Union" omits another Malay political track from the same period.
