Why Did the Gates Open? The Fall of Singapura in the Malay Annals

The Malay Annals tells the fall of Singapura not from the moment a fleet appeared in the strait, but from a humiliation inflicted within the court. Raja Secander Shah, swayed by the intrigues of the inner chambers, ordered the public execution of Sang Ranjuna Tapa's daughter; her father then opened himself to Majapahit. Whether this account can be taken as literal history is uncertain, but it is perfectly clear about one thing: how the Malay court tradition wished to judge a ruler's character.
