In 2014, PKR manufactured the Kajang state seat by-election, originally intending for Anwar to win the state seat and change the Menteri Besar. A court ruling prevented Anwar from contesting, Wan Azizah stood in for him and won; Khalid refused to resign, PAS's stance was divided, and ultimately Azmin Ali was appointed as Menteri Besar.
