After Singapore joined Malaysia, the truly difficult part began. The common market remained unfulfilled, while tax and financial arrangements were constantly disputed; The People's Action Party (PAP) participated in the 1964 federal election and subsequently proposed a "Malaysian Malaysia," clashing directly with the Alliance's political structure. Indonesia's Konfrontasi applied pressure from the outside, while the 1964 racial riots in Singapore brought political conflict down to the streets of ordinary people. By 1965, the leaderships on both sides were discussing not just how to repair the federation, but how to end it.
