Malaysia inherited the Sedition Act 1948 from British colonial administration, originally designed to counter communist threats. Over more than seven decades, it has been used to prosecute poets, cartoonists, academics, members of parliament, journalists, and government critics. Pakatan Harapan pledged to abolish it in the 2018 general election manifesto, yet as of 2026 the act remains in force, with new prosecutions continuing. The central question: is this colonial-era statute still a legitimate national security tool, or has it become an instrument for suppressing democratic dissent?
