Fifty Years Waiting to Be Recognised

The UEC never received federal recognition — until Anwar's cabinet made its first formal move in 2026

In 1975, students at Malaysia's Chinese independent schools sat the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) for the first time. Fifty years later, on 15 May 2026, the Anwar cabinet approved the "UEC+2" framework, allowing independent school graduates who pass SPM Bahasa Melayu and History to apply to specific public university programmes. It was the first time the federal government had made a formal cabinet decision on UEC. Dong Zong called it "half-hearted."
