Japanese Occupation of Malaya: Three Years and Eight Months

The occupiers kept a separate ledger for each community. After the war, they each held their own book

From 18 February 1942, the Japanese military launched "Sook Ching" screenings against Chinese men in Singapore. That same month, orders were issued: the 5th and 18th Divisions were to enter the Malayan Peninsula to execute the same. How many died remains unsettled to this day — and what this piece seeks to explain is exactly that: why the figure remains unsettled to this day, and how a "separate accounting" governance technique turned people who lived apart before the war into people keeping scores against each other after the war.
