From 18 February 1942, the Japanese military launched "Sook Ching" screenings against Chinese men in Singapore. That same month, orders were issued: the 5th and 18th Divisions were to enter the Malayan Peninsula to execute the same. How many died remains unsettled to this day — and what this piece seeks to explain is exactly that: why the figure remains unsettled to this day, and how a "separate accounting" governance technique turned people who lived apart before the war into people keeping scores against each other after the war.
