Where Did the Melaka Royal Line Go After 1511?

After the fall of Malacca, the royal lineage was not broken—it retreated south and later branched into two kingdoms

In July 1511, Portuguese forces breached the gates of Malacca. Sultan Mahmud Shah retreated from the city with his followers, beginning a seventeen-year exile. He eventually died in Kampar, Sumatra, but his sons returned to the islands—one went south to establish Johor, and the other went north to establish Perak. Over two hundred years later, the Bugis from Sulawesi came to Selangor, and the Minangkabau from Sumatra came to Negeri Sembilan. Today's national borders were drawn by the British and the Dutch in 1824—before that, this line did not exist here.
