Fifty-Two Seats: The Election That Decided Who Would Negotiate the Constitution

In 1955, Malaya was not yet independent — but a federal election had already answered the question of who could sit at the negotiating table

On 27 July 1955, Malaya held its only federal-level election before independence. This was not the first general election of an independent nation, nor a fully elected government, yet it was the decisive vote that determined who would participate in the constitutional negotiations. The Alliance won 51 of 52 seats; Onn Jaafar's multiracial party approach was defeated at the ballot box; PAS held the sole opposition seat; and Britain found it far easier to recognise Tunku Abdul Rahman as Malaya's representative in the independence talks.
