How Does Malaysia's Executive Power Work? The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Cabinet, and Prime Minister

The Constitution writes executive power in the name of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, but everyday politics must run through the Cabinet and Prime Minister

The independence constitution did not arrange only symbols. It also had to let government run every day. Article 39 vests the executive authority of the Federation in the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, but allows it to be exercised by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Cabinet, ministers, or persons authorised by law. Article 40 requires the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to act on advice in most matters. Article 43 then arranges the Cabinet and Prime Minister. This chapter explains how executive power moves from royal name into the daily machinery of responsible government.
