Anwar's Taiwan remarks revealed a half-century of diplomatic language being quietly rewritten

In August 2026, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's comments on Taiwan during an Al Jazeera interview triggered a fierce backlash. But this was no diplomatic slip of the tongue — the 2024 Malaysia-China Joint Statement had already quietly swapped a critical word from "acknowledging (a position)" to "recognizing (a fact)." Anwar simply said aloud what had been written into the record two years earlier.
