Malaysia's Chinese Independent School Unified Examination (UEC) was established in 1975 and is now recognized by over a thousand universities worldwide, yet has never received formal recognition by the nation's public universities. In May 2026, the government announced a conditional university admission pathway: UEC graduates could apply to public universities using their National Examination Board scores in Malay Language and History, but only for four Chinese-related fields of study; the Director-General of Higher Education explicitly stated "this is not recognition of the UEC curriculum."
